The Japanese government has provided USD 696,310 to HALO Afghanistan for mine clearance operations in North and Central regions of Afghanistan.
The fund will allow HALO to employ 108 trained de-miners to carry out mine clearance operations in selected minefields in Takhar, Baghlan and Parwan.
The selected areas are high quality agricultural or grazing lands that have remained inaccessible due to presence of mines.
The immediate clearance of the mines in these areas will enable the local community to use the lands and generate income.
Contribution over USD 5bn since 2001 to Afghanistan’s reconstruction, Japan has been a major donor for Afghanistan over the past decade. The Japanese government has supported 61 demining projects in Afghanistan at a total cost of USD 122mn.
